Pixtures!

Drawing has been a simple pleasure of mine, ever since I was a little girl hiding beneath my parent's glass-topped dinner table with my pad of paper and Crayolas. What follows are some pieces I've created over the past few years, as a result of rediscovering this childhood pasttime after a long hiatus.

Married - A Super-Deformed portrait of myself and my husband, Sean, I created for magnet favors for our wedding. I wanted to do something personal that reflected both his and my hobbies, hence , the dress Starfleet uniform for my darling Trekkie and the Sailor Moon ensemble to represent my anime (Japanese animation) and manga (Japanese comics) obsession. The little daisy on my headpiece is a tribute to Dot from Animaniacs. I've written the comic book adaptation of the Warner Bros. cartoon for four years.

Daniel - A character from the DC Comics dark fantasy series Sandman, one of my all-time favorite comics created by Britain's answer to Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman.

Chirality - A group shot of the main characters of the Satoshi Urushihara comic. For a guy fixated with cute girls and breasts, he sure draws some good-looking guys.

Death - yet another SD portrait of everyone's favorite embodiment of the grim reaper, from the DC Comic Sandman. There's an inherent cuteness to the character that lends itself to this style of art, in my personal opinion.

Kujaku - from the manga (and anime) RG Veda by the all-girl super studio CLAMP, and also one of my all-time favorite characters. Based on Hindu mythology, RG Veda is CLAMP's first professional work; I saw the anime adaptation back in '93 and have been a devoted CLAMP tramp ever since.

Twins - More SD fun! This picture I did as a gift for Chad and Brad Diederichs for their 21st birthday. The lads are major players in U.S. anime/manga fandom, whose enthusiasm and love for the medium are downright infectious. Hugs 'n kisses, boys! ^_^

Plum - My humble tribute to bishounen ('pretty-boys' in Japanese), fruit and butt-cleavage. I created a stencil to produce the gold gingko leaves on his kimono, in case you were wondering.

Umi Ryuzaki - A character from the CLAMP fantasy series Magic Knight Rayearth (told you I was a fan). This and the two following pieces I hammered out in the space of an evening or two for a Rayearth fan-page gallery. I'd always worked in colored pencil, but this is the first time I attempted to blend and layer colors with them.

Fuu Hououji - Another of the main characters of Rayearth. She's got glasses, which means she's the smart, sensible girl of the group. Have there ever been any dumb glasses-wearing characters in comics and cartoons?

Hikaru Shidou - Ostensibly, the lead character of Rayearth, and my personal favorite of the trio. I've always had a soft spot for those tomboyish, plucky, relentlessly cheerful ('genki' in Japanese) characters. Plus, she magically manifests these cute li'l cat ears in SD mode. Couldn't you just d-i-e die?

Bunny Girl - This piece I drew in honor of Chinese New Year (Year of the Rabbit, dontcha know). Chinese New Year coincided with Valentine's Day this year (1999), which is why I chose a red color scheme and the heart-shaped cut-out on her tunic. I suppose I ought to give her a name at some point; any ideas?

Ashura - Another character from the series RG Veda by CLAMP. What intrigued me about this character is that he (she? it?) has no gender. Weird, I know, but this genderless/androgynous character type appears a lot in shoujo ('girls') manga for some reason. This is probably the oldest piece on the page, done back in '94-'95. Never would have guessed it, wouldya? ^_^;

Goddess - My first attempt at computer coloring with Corel Photo Paint. This evolved out of my speculation as to what a World-Wide Web deity would look like. Like Bunny-Gal, this digital divinity is as yet unnamed. Maybe "Babe, the Big Blue Binary Deva"?

Sandman - 1999 is the ten-year anniversary of , you guessed it, Sandman. Pictured here are mini-versions of some of the title character's family, The Endless, including the birthday boy, himself.

Hsien-Ko - ...or Lei-Lei, whichever you'd like to call her, was the subject of the Halloween card I sent to friends this year. This is the first time I attempted drawing everyone's favorite fightin' Chinese acrobat ghost from the DarkStalkers video game, and the first time I used Paint Shop Pro to color it.

Gift Art -

Chika made me this absolutely adorable CG pic in honor of our link exchange; it's so good it puts my humble gallery to shame! Check out her wonderful site "Hesperia" on my links page.
